Inputs and assumptions
Use average daily unit demand, a realistic replenishment lead time and safety coverage in days. Distinguish stock already on hand from confirmed inbound units and subtract units already allocated to other orders.
Formulas
Reorder point = daily demand × (lead time + safety days), rounded up to whole units. Inventory position = on hand + confirmed in transit − allocated. Suggested replenishment is the positive gap between the reorder point and inventory position.
Worked example
Daily demand of 10, lead time of 20 days and safety coverage of 5 days give a reorder point of 250 units. If on hand is 50, inbound is 20 and allocated is 10, inventory position is 60 and the suggested gap is 190 units. Seasonality, order minimums and uncertain inbound delivery need separate judgment.
